About The Project

The BudgiT Sénégal Green Accountability Project – is an initiative of BudgIT Foundation Senegal, supported by the global Green Accountability Platform—a global consortium led by the World Resources Institute (WRI), Huairou Commission, and SouthSouthNorth (SSN) with support from the World Bank’s Global Partnership for Social Accountability.
In June 2024, Alongside peers in Bangladesh, Brazil, Cameroon, and Mexico, BudgiT Sénégal was one of the five grantee organizations selected in Senegal under the Green Accountability Platform.

The world faces a climate accountability crisis. While finance for climate action is increasing globally, the flow of funds remains opaque, inconsistently tracked, and often fails to reach the communities most at risk. Senegal, like many developing countries, needs clear, transparent, and participatory processes to ensure climate finance is both fair and effective. We believe that citizens should not only know where climate funds are going but also have a voice in how they are allocated and implemented.

The project’s goal is to empower citizens, civil society, and grassroots organizations with accessible financial information so they can actively track climate finance and budget investments. By focusing on key sectors such as agriculture, energy, water, and sanitation, we aim to bridge the gap between climate finance allocations and the communities most impacted by climate change.

Our Mission and Goals

Increase Transparency: Make information on climate finance allocations and expenditures in Senegal’s key sectors participatory, transparent, publicly accessible and easy to understand.

Amplify Citizen Voices: Support civil society and grassroots organizations to integrate community feedback into climate finance decision-making processes.

Advocate for Accountability: Encourage collaboration with government institutions to influence, implement, and monitor climate finance processes to ensure they are fair and effective.

Build a Movement: Strengthen national networks of advocates for green accountability, develop evidence-based advocacy strategies, and establish meaningful dialogues with policymakers.

Our Approach

Data-Driven Advocacy: We leverage our expertise in budget analysis to track, simplify, and publish data on climate finance flows, making complex information accessible to all citizens.

Community Engagement: We work directly with grassroots organizations and communities to ensure their perspectives and needs are heard by decision-makers.

Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue: We facilitate constructive dialogues between civil society, community leaders, and government institutions to build trust and collaborative solutions.

Knowledge Sharing: As a grantee, we are part of a global Community of Practice with leaders from four other countries, allowing us to share strategies, tools, and innovations in green accountability.
